Therapy Process

Evaluation

The Speech Studio's comprehensive speech and language evaluation assesses all areas of communication to determine your child's strengths and areas of need. The evaluation process lasts approximately one and a half to two hours and consists of the following:

  • Parent interview
  • Review of records and developmental history
  • A variety of communicative (speaking, listening, playing, etc.) tasks
  • Post-assessment parent discussion
  • Recommendations

Dynamic Assessment

After the initial evaluation, children participate in a period of dynamic assessment that lasts approximately four weeks. This time is spent finding your child's level of mastery and level of weakness for each specific skill as well as getting to know your child's learning profile. This allows for more individualized and approriate goals to be written. Important components of the dynamic assessment period are:

  • Baseline data collection
  • Formal and/or informal assessment measures
  • Evaluation report and Treatment Plan
  • Referrals and recommendations

Treatment

Speech therapy requires a unique and special relationship between families and the therapist that is built on a commitment to attend therapy and participate in planned activities. Your therapist is dedicated to exploring your child's strengths while targeting scaffolded and developmentally appropriate goals to meet your child's specific needs. The treatment sessions are individualized, play-based, and data-driven to effectively measure your child’s progress.

The length and frequency of therapy depends on your child's learning style, sensory/behavioral needs, family needs and support, and level of engagement. Our therapy sessions are 30, 45, or 60 minutes long, the last few minutes of which are used for a discussion about current treatment approaches, progress, and home recommendations. Our treatment plans are written for a 6 month period. At the end of each treatment plan parents meet with their therapist to discuss progress and recommendations for future services.
